It’s been too long since I hiked Ragged Top to really remember the details, so I’ll just make a few notes here.
Ragged Top is the beautiful mountain on the left as you drive north in I-10 towards Picacho Peak. To me it looks rather like a crown with its ragged profile.
A good page to read about hiking Ragged Top is this one. And this one. And this one. And this one.
When I did Ragged Top, I went completely the wrong way and ended up doing lots of 3rd class and 4th class scrambling. I didn’t go far enough round to the right. The correct way is easy, nothing more than 2nd class scrambling except for a few feet at the very top. The correct way up is also very obvious and well trodden. I found it on the way down 😀.
You are not supposed to summit Ragged Top during the bighorn sheep lambing season, which runs from January 1 through April 30. If you go during this time you’ll see many signs requesting that you not summit the peak.
